Hi everyone! I’m Nari. Or at least I go by Nari because after 10 years in the US I got tired of correcting people who mispronounced my name.
I also got tired of people who would tell me that they were just going to call me “Narnia,” or “Nar,” or “Nancy,” or whatever other permutation of my name. So we’re going to stick with Nari.
I like telling people that I was born in a country that no longer exists, which is technically true because I was born in the USSR. When I was really young I aspired to become a Pioneer (as many nice Soviet children did – this was like a Soviet version of Girl/Boy Scouts run by the Communist party – you graduated to the Komsomol, the Young Communist League). Around the same time I also aspired to become a bunny rabbit. Unfortunately, neither aspiration was fulfilled, but I do still hold bunny rabbits in tender regard.
I left home when I was 16 and have been working on reconciling my identity of the would be Pioneer with the new reality of my American life ever since.
